A Gem in Tappan!
OpenTable Diner Since 2013
Dined on April 7, 2016Il Portico, a restaurant we have passed many times over the years. Always said we would try it but never did until last week. Sorry we didn't go sooner. It was wonderful, As soon as you walk in, you get that warm, comfortable feeling. The service, the food and the ambience were all excellent. The staff were warm and friendly and paid attention to detail. Can't wait to go back again. Highly recommend!

Best Italian in Rockland/Northern NJ area!
OpenTable Diner Since 2011
Dined on March 20, 2016This is my favorite Italian place to eat. Little pricy but the food is always so good and totally worth it. However, I found the taste was little dull this time. Chicken cutlet I had was really really thin, used to be thicker and more juicy. Penne needed more salt and pepper. Still, compare to other Italian places around here, it is still the best on my list. We also had seafood salad, Gnocchi, calamari, and red wine. Whatever you order here is very good.
Il Portico is a real gem!
OpenTable Diner Since 2016
Dined on February 27, 2016Il Portico is a special place. I'd eaten here twice before as part of a group and always thought that it would be a nice place for a romantic meal with a special someone, and I was right. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The food was fantastic and entree portions were significant. Overall, everything about the evening was special. The pace of the courses was unhurried and we were given significant time between them to talk and sip our wine. Never once did I feel hurried to give up my table for an awaiting group, which made our night as romantic as I'd imagined that it would be.
Waited too long!
Dined on January 20, 2016We did not realize how much we had enjoyed Il portico until we went back after too many years...will not let that happen again. Great experience from the moment we walked in the door, drinks apps dinner desert. Service was superb and the food memorable. We will be back soon....

"What a find!"
Review by Kate on January 24, 2015
"OMG. We had a wonderful meal here. This restaurant has been totally overhauled so if you haven't been here in years, it's time to go back. It will become your 'go to' restaurant. The staff are wonderful. Peppe is friendly and caring. I had a delicious chopped salad followed by scaloppine of veal served saltimbocca style. It was the best EVER. So delicately flavored and a nice portion. It was served with fingerling potatoes and green beans cooked to perfection. My husband had clams oreganato followed by osso bucco served with polenta. He loved it. The wine list is nicely priced and offers a decent selection. We are definitely making this one of our regular spots to dine."

5 Stars - Yelp - 8/14/14
My cousin told me about this place that served excellent northern Italian food and was newly renovated after a car crashed into it in March. I stopped in for lunch on Tuesday to see the place and try out the food. As soon as I stepped in the door, I was greeted by an Italian gentleman (turned out to be the owner) who treated me like I was family he hadn't seen in a while. The place was tastefully decorated - crisp white linen table cloths, a few Italian framed posters on pastel green walls.
I had a prociutto appetizer, which came with sliced figs and Gorgonzola cheese - very original combination of flavors and a creative presentation. For the main course, I had the white striped bass with squash and tomatoes. The fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned with fresh herbs - the seasoning was just enough to enhance the taste of the fish - not overpowering. And the portion size was perfect for lunch. For dessert, I tried the pistachio gelato - good flavor, not as creamy as I would have expected - but a tasty finish to a satisfying lunch.
When I mentioned to the owner that I heard about the car crash, he showed me the place where the car had broken through the corner of the building and had smashed one of the tables. I couldn't see any evidence of the damage. He was clearly very proud of the work he put into restoring the place, which he told me was originally built in the 1850's.
5 Stars - Yelp "One of My Favorite Restaurants in the Area"
One of my favorite restaurants in the area. My husband and used to go there 3 times a month (until we moved) and have never had a bad experience. It's an Italian based menu. The portions are just right- and the food is great. Not like one of those places that give you a lb of average pasta and sauce. I love the mozzarella salad and the salmon-always cooked perfect. The staff is very professional and attentive. Love love love this hidden gem.

5 5 5 Stars - 201 Dining
Well worth the trip from anywhere in the area. Occuppying what was once a circa 1850 stagecoach stop and hotel, the atmosphere is historic and charming. Never mind that the service is spot on and they get all the basics right - tender veal, perfectly cooked seafood, al dente pasta, crisp vegatables - it's the flavors that will bring you back.
5 Stars - Zagat - "Feel 200 Years of History"
...and see lots of paintings and flowers too in the "charming old house" that's the home of this "quiet, elegant" Tappan Italian whose "delicious", "familiar fare is expertly done" "with a light touch" and delivered by an "attentive" staff that "really tries to please"; in sum, "a lovely little oasis"
5 Stars - Zagat - "Wonderfully Quaint"
... onetime stagecoach stop serves as the backdrop for “good”, “authentic” Northern Italian cooking at this “lovely” if lesser-known Tappan spot located in a “historical neighborhood”; it’s a tad “expensive”, and portions are perhaps “tiny”, but softly lit, flower-bedecked dining rooms add to the “perfect ambiance” that helps make it “worth a trip.”
Dining out Rockland
You'll get a taste of times gone when you visit this unique restaurant that was once a 1850s hotel and stagecoach stop. Locals love the grilled Portobello mushroom - which is like a cut of steak - with a side salad and balsamic reduction.
